CHILD SUPPORT

Child Support

Child support is a payment from one parent to another for the care of their child or children. If an application is made to Services Australia (Child Support) (also known as the Agency) for an assessment, the Agency will consider the income of each parent, and the time the children spend with their parents. Payments are then calculated using a complex formula with reference to that information.

You can obtain an estimate of child support that you will pay or receive using the child support estimator.

The concept behind child support is that the parents of a child, whether or not the child lives with both parents or one parent, are responsible for meeting the costs of their child. A parent who has a higher income is required to contribute more and a parent who cares for the children more requires more support.

Child support is a complex area and the solicitors at HDC are experienced in dealing with these issues.
